Can a habitable house be built in 4.2m x 20m plot with three side common walls?

The clients, a family accustomed to changing homes due to their parents' government jobs, never had the chance to own and personalize a house to their liking. Post-retirement, they decided to build a home in their native village where the parents could enjoy their time with family and farms. In a scenario common in India, the family's land in the core city area was divided into two narrow vertical plots for both sisters. Inspired by the Tube house designs and a visit to Vietnam, we embarked on creating a home that maximized the potential of this unique site.

Despite the narrow plot, we utilized the sky and volume to guide our design. The house features split levels, visually and physically connected around a central courtyard. This series of built and open spaces revolves around the courtyard, a covered volume linking the various levels of the home. The plinth profile is varied to reduce filling and protect against flooding.

A sloping roof encompasses the changing heights of the house, allowing sunlight to reach almost every part. Services are placed at the rear, accessible to all without disrupting the central flow of the home.

Visual connections, both horizontal and vertical, create a hidden retreat where the family can enjoy retirement with fresh indoor spaces and visually connected outdoor areas for gardening. The central courtyard, featuring a fish pond, continues the family's hobby and includes pet members from their old home. The entrance, covered by a loft space, provides a cozy niche to enjoy the rains while staying connected to the courtyard indoors.

This project has taught us, along with the people involved, that challenges spur creativity and efficient resource usage. It has sparked discussions about the need and sizing of plots in both urban and rural settings. We view this as an opportunity where surrounding homes create a thermal shield from harsh summers and enhance security. This experimental home has attracted many neighbors, prompting them to rethink living in dark, dingy rooms connected by narrow corridors.

In creating this home, we've not only provided a sanctuary for the family but also opened new possibilities for efficient, creative housing solutions in both urban and rural landscapes.
