House at Kashyapi
When the view is magical, do we really need anything beyond some shade for comfort ?
Nestled against the serene backdrop of Kashyapi Dam's backwaters, this weekend retreat invites tranquility and connection with nature. Our initial visit to the site left us awestruck and deeply immersed in its natural beauty. Standing beneath the lush canopy, we were captivated by the gentle shade, uninterrupted views, and the inherent comfort of the environment. Inspired by this profound experience, we sought to design a home that honors the site’s essence while integrating harmoniously with its surroundings.

The retreat's design features a palette of basalt stone, chosen to blend seamlessly with the landscape and provide a subtle, natural backdrop for the verdant greenery to flourish. The unfolding views are gradually revealed, sparking curiosity and discovery. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a central stepped courtyard, which serves as the heart of the home, distinguishing the upper and lower living areas. The journey through the entrance corridor culminates in the delightful surprise of an open space, offering a sense of openness and connection.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the home accommodates both private and communal use. The courtyard serves as a central gathering space, facilitating larger groups while maintaining intimate areas for personal retreat. Descending the stone steps leads to a shaded verandah-like area, where an infinity pool merges seamlessly with the distant water horizon. This design element fosters a profound sense of disconnection from built structures and a deep connection with the surrounding natural beauty.
Cantilevered decks are thoughtfully integrated to complement the terrain and slopes, allowing nature to continue its interaction with the built environment. The structure’s base, crafted from locally sourced basalt stone, supports a lightweight canopy of steel and clay tiles, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The architectural intent is for the retreat to blend into its surroundings, eventually becoming a subtle part of the landscape, offering comfort and cherished memories for its inhabitants and visitors alike.
