House with 2 gardens
A place to retire or a place to relive?
In 2018, our studio embarked on its inaugural architecture project, crafting a retirement home for a vibrant elderly couple celebrating 50 years of marriage. Nestled on a 1013 sq. ft. plot, this project marked a special milestone for us, as the couple's enthusiasm and engagement throughout the design process enriched our journey.

Situated among single-family homes, the house is oriented to capture the gentle east-facing morning sun. We designed an open floor plan with proportionate openings to welcome sunlight into every corner. A wooden screen element provides daytime privacy while maintaining an inviting atmosphere.
The layout features two distinct gardens: one welcoming and the other a private retreat for the couple. Stone slats create a balanced separation between their garden and the neighbouring homes. The east balcony, positioned at a mid-landing level, encourages daily climbs, making morning tea and sun worship a cherished ritual
The first floor serves as a space for family visits, while a bespoke bar cabinet showcases their love for fine wine and whisky, becoming a focal point of the home. A neutral teak wood palette complements their cherished dining table and furniture, blending personal history with modern design.
Completed in 11 months, this project was a learning experience and a testament to the couple’s enduring spirit and our studio’s evolving capabilities
